A Hug From Heaven

Sunday last, I had a busy day. After church, there had been a meeting followed by several visits in the capacity of one of my church callings. Late in the afternoon, I was finally headed up the canyon towards home.

As I drove, I had another impression that at first, I resisted. “Oh Father, really? I am so hungry, and I just want to go home.”

I almost passed the turn off but decided last minute to take it.

As I headed toward a ward sister’s home, I thought of her earlier text where she had confided in me that their family had had another church related let down, and she was, understandably so, feeling deflated.

She’s got a rough situation, and most days, I really have little idea how to be helpful. As I turned down her long driveway, the Spirit said to me, “Give her a hug from heaven.”

I knocked and waited for an answer. She came to the door and was obviously surprised by my unannounced visit. I simply said, “I came to deliver a hug from heaven.” We embraced, and it was a moment when heaven connected with earth. In fact, so much so that we both felt it, and it sort of connected us – right there on the front porch.

She invited me in and we shared hearts and laughs and worries, tears, and fears.

I loved her instantly and this not knowing what to do or how to be helpful just melted away, and I knew what to do: be present in her pain with her, share some of my sorrow to give her a chance to listen, express faith in Christ as our sustainment, hope, and help, and take time to look at and validate the project she just finished.

It was so effortless, so meaningful, so beautiful.

I was just going to deliver a hug from heaven and actually what happened was that I got hugged from heaven!

I believe in heaven, and I know heavenly sent hugs are real.

Unto all the world: Who can you help heaven hug today?
